Various companies sponsored the dredging project, including Van der Leun with the sponsoring and installation of the lighting.

The sculpture was created after the municipality organized a design competition for a work of art that makes Sliedrecht recognizable upon entering the village. One of the prize-winning designs was Maarten de Winter's artwork with his 'BaggerBeeld'. He was inspired by Sliedrecht as the cradle of the global dredging industry.

The statue is at the exit Sliedrecht-West coming from the A15 highway.
